Hungary alleges that Western media will continue spreading ‘fake news’

(MENAFN) Hungary’s foreign minister has dismissed reports suggesting that the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump has been scrapped, calling the claims “fake news” designed to undermine peace efforts.

Peter Szijjarto said on Wednesday that the Western press is deliberately circulating false information to derail the planned summit in Budapest. Several media outlets had reported earlier this week, citing unnamed US officials, that the meeting had been “put on hold.”

Responding to those claims, Szijjarto wrote on X that ever since the summit was announced after last week’s phone call between the two leaders, “it was obvious that many would do everything possible to stop it from happening.” He added, “The pro-war political elite and their media always behave this way before events that could prove decisive between war and peace.”

He warned that similar disinformation campaigns would persist in the days leading up to the talks, saying, “Until the summit actually takes place, expect a wave of leaks, fake news, and statements claiming that it will not happen.”

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov also denounced the media claims as “infodumps,” asserting that their purpose was to obstruct diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. “EU and NATO countries are seeking to torpedo everything,” he said.

While EU representatives have publicly indicated that they would support another Putin-Trump encounter, reports suggest that European officials privately view the prospect as politically risky. One European diplomat was quoted as saying, “no one likes it,” and that “we are all grinning through our teeth whilst saying this is fine.”

Contrary to reports that the Budapest summit has been canceled, Russian presidential aide Kirill Dmitriev maintained that planning is still in progress. He accused the media of misrepresenting information from its sources, saying the outlet in question had “twisting” the facts. “Preparations continue” for the Budapest summit, he confirmed in a post on X.
