UK Military Leaders Support Security Deal with Germany
High-ranking officials, including a former chief of defense staff and a former NATO secretary-general, have urged London to initiate discussions with Berlin, citing the “critical” threat posed by Russia and “growing concerns” about the potential reduction of the US's involvement in European defense matters.
Germany, which is restricted from developing its own nuclear weapons, is already in “strategic discussions” with Paris regarding joining France’s nuclear defense system.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who has been accused by Russia of “escalating anti-Russian rhetoric literally every day,” has expressed a willingness to explore a similar nuclear arrangement with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as reported by the publication.
Although the media outlet’s sources state that formal talks between London and Berlin have yet to begin, several defense officials have voiced support for the proposal.
“It’s right and proper and should have happened a long time ago,” said Lord Robertson, a former NATO secretary-general, as quoted by the outlet.
“If Russia continues to deploy nuclear rhetoric, it’s going to force some decisions to be made inside Europe as a whole,” he added.
Britain’s nuclear deterrent, which has been declared to NATO since 1962, remains under the control of the UK alone, with one of its Trident-armed submarines always on patrol.
Earlier this year, Starmer announced plans to acquire 12 F-35A stealth jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which will be stationed in the UK.
