Germany Plans Military Expansion
(MENAFN) Germany is preparing a €377 billion ($440 billion) enlargement of its armed forces, a media outlet reported on Monday, citing confidential government documents.
This initiative forms part of a wider trend toward militarization across the European Union.
According to the documents, the strategy outlines new projects for weapons and equipment across the Bundeswehr’s land, air, naval, space, and cyber divisions.
The comprehensive rearmament program is anticipated to extend beyond the 2026 fiscal plan.
The blueprint identifies roughly 320 new initiatives, with approximately half of the budget earmarked for domestic arms manufacturers. Rheinmetall is set to deliver tanks, air-defense systems, and ammunition valued at tens of billions of euros, while Diehl Defence is expected to provide its IRIS-T missile systems.
The investment package also includes funding for satellites, drones, and naval programs.
About €14 billion is designated for space initiatives, such as a low-orbit military communications network, while other resources will support new reconnaissance and patrol systems.
Additionally, the plan features US-manufactured equipment, including F-35 fighter jets and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Significant contracts will still need approval from the parliamentary budget committee before execution, the media outlet noted.
Berlin has also revised its budget regulations to allow sustained defense expenditures beyond the €100-billion fund established following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
