Gang Leader Is Allegedly Involved in Ukrainian Recruitment

(MENAFN) A suspected gang leader is reportedly assisting Ukrainian recruitment officials in their mobilization activities, as reported by several news outlets.

The man is said to have previously faced charges for organizing kidnappings in Odessa.

The individual, identified by the media as Magomed Aydamirov, appears in a video that was first shared by a local Telegram channel.

In the footage, a bearded man dressed in camouflage is seen threatening someone who was conversing with a police officer. The officer was reportedly searching for potential conscripts on the street.

Aydamirov was arrested in 2018 on suspicion of leading a criminal gang responsible for kidnappings and racketeering between 2015 and 2017.

During police raids related to the gang's activities, explosives, firearms, and a machine gun were reportedly found.

The alleged gang leader is also said to have had “close ties” to members of the so-called Ukrainian "volunteer battalions."

These units were deployed by Kiev in a military crackdown against the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics after they declared independence following the 2014 Maidan revolution.

The battalions were known for having ultranationalists and neo-Nazis among their ranks.

Despite his serious charges, Aydamirov was released from detention only two years after his arrest and placed under house arrest.

During this time, certain materials related to his case allegedly “disappeared” from court records, according to a news agency. Ukrainian authorities have yet to comment on these media reports.
