NEWS RELEASE: Maryland Horse Industry Board 2027 Grant Application Period is Now Open!

ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 6, 2026)—The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) today announced that the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB) is now accepting applications for its 2027 grant program. The Maryland Horse Board Grants Program provides funding for research, education and promotional activities that further develop Maryland’s horse industry.

These grants are supported through the Maryland Feed Fund, which collects $6.00 from each ton of horse feed sold in the state. Since the fund was established in 2002, nearly $700,000 has been awarded to more than 450 projects that support horses, horse owners, equine organizations, educational institutions and local communities. The deadline to apply for the 2027 grant program is October 5, 2026.

“Maryland’s horse industry is an essential part of our state’s agricultural heritage and economy, supporting thousands of jobs, preserving farmland and strengthening communities across Maryland,” said Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks. “The Maryland Horse Board Grants Program is a smart investment in that future, helping organizations educate, innovate and promote the many opportunities our equine industry provides. Every project we support helps ensure Maryland remains a premier destination for horses, horse owners and equine businesses.”

Applicants are encouraged to review the 2027 Grant Guidelines prior to applying. Funding requests should not exceed $3,000 with the average award amount being around $850. In 2025, the MHIB awarded nearly $25,000 in funding to 36 projects statewide.

Eligible parties include nonprofit organizations, equine associations, clubs, businesses, licensed farms and stables, educational institutions, and local and state government entities. Projects that demonstrate collaboration and strengthen Maryland’s equine industry will receive additional consideration.

Applications must be submitted through the online portal found on the Maryland Horse Board Grants Program webpage. Grant recipients will be announced in January 2027. All funded projects, with final reports received by MHIB, must be completed by June 30, 2027.

The MHIB was established in 1998 to promote and develop Maryland’s equine industry.
