Prime Minister for Fox News and Newsmax: We have to get rid of double standards
SLOVENIA, September 24 - The Prime Minister stressed that one of the key messages of his address to the UN General Assembly would be a warning against double standards in addressing crises around the world.
"If we want the United Nations to fulfil its fundamental objectives, we must get rid of double standards. We must use the same tools and the same standards when addressing all crises," the Prime Minister stressed.
In his words, a large part of the international community's attention is currently focused on the situation in Gaza and the Palestinian territories, while other crises receive significantly less attention. In this context, he drew attention to the war in Ukraine, the persecution of Christians in various parts of the world, and rising antisemitism. "We must not direct all our attention, money and energy towards a single crisis hotspot while neglecting other problems, some of which are much bigger," he said.
In his interview with Newsmax, he stressed that the United Nations was established with the aim of resolving disputes peacefully. According to him, differences in the positions of states are not in themselves a problem. "The main problem is that we do not apply the same standards when addressing global problems," he said.
A significant part of both interviews was also devoted to the situation in Iran and wider developments in the Middle East. The Prime Minister expressed a critical view of the Iranian regime and warned of its role in regional conflicts. He stressed that developments in the Middle East need to be understood in a broader geopolitical context and that the links between Iran and Russia must also be taken into account.
He also spoke about relations between Slovenia and Israel. He described the opening of the Israeli Embassy in Slovenia as a step towards normalising relations between the two countries and stressed that the two countries have maintained relations since Slovenia gained independence.
The Prime Minister placed particular emphasis on relations between Slovenia and the United States. "The United States is of crucial importance to Western civilisation. What is going on in the US has an influence on us all," he said, recalling that during the period of democratisation and gaining independence, Slovenia saw the United States as one of the key models of the Western democratic world.
"The West without the United States is lost," he stressed in his interview with Fox News.
He also highlighted the special bond between the two countries represented by US First Lady Melania Trump, who was born in Slovenia. He noted that the vast majority of Slovenians view her role positively and particularly highlighted her initiatives aimed at children.
In both interviews, the Prime Minister also spoke about his meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He said that during their conversation, he invited President Trump to visit Slovenia.
"I invited President Trump to visit Slovenia. He promised that he would come," the Prime Minister said.
The interviews with two prominent US media outlets also provided an opportunity to present Slovenia's views on current international issues, as well as relations between Slovenia and the United States, to the American public.
